To pin files at Sia decentralized storage, the system need Siacoin to create contract.
Upload and download SIa Skynet via gateway web3portal.com, the web portal owner will pay the Siacoin for its users.

You can pin files using IPFS software at your computer, but you can't guarantee others do the same, your files may loss in IPFS network if your computer malfunction. With Sia decentralized storage, as long as your contracts (directly or indirectly) are alive, you can turn off your computer, the Sia decentralized storage system will do the job, you need to frequently check your Sia wallet, make sure you have ALLOCATED enough Siacoin for the contract renewal.

If you upload using Sia gateway service, you are depend on the owner's Sia contracts. if the owner shut down the service, like a Skynet main gateway siasky.net have been shut down, old contracts still alive but no more renewal by the web portal, to rescue you data, you or another 3rd party Sia gateway provider need to pin your uploaded files before the contracts end.
